Queering Grief

A support group for Queer and Trans Identified people navigating the complexities of loss, led by Rachael Mathieu, LICSW

Expanding the binary on grieving with Rachael Mathieu, LICSW. A support group for Queer and Trans identified people navigating the complexities of loss.

“Grief is an ingredient in every love potion”-Andrea Gibson

Grief is part of the fabric for many people within the queer community. Grief that extends past the immediate experiences of loss, and doesn’t always have a name or specific origin. Ambiguous loss within the queer community can look and feel like:

  • Unprocessed grief for the loss of the childhood/adolescence you wish you had
  • Relationships that are in and out of your life because they struggle to acknowledge or support you
  • Collective grief and rage for our past, present and futures

This space is:

  • Queer and Trans affirming, led by a Queer therapist
  • Non-judgmental and confidential
  • Focused on all kinds of grief

In this group we will:

  • Learn and self define experiences of ambiguous grief
  • Share, reflect, support and witness each other’s stories of loss and disconnection
  • Create ideas for rituals to name, tend to and release all types of grief
  • Leave with practices for continued self care beyond the group

Details & Timing

Each group has its own schedule, meeting time, and size. Some meet weekly, while others are single-day workshops.

In your first session, the facilitator will review the group structure, introduce members, and explain how sessions will run. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. There’s no pressure to open up right away.

Preparing For Your Session

Before your first session, you might reflect on:

  • What brings me to this group?
  • What would I like to explore or work on?
  • What do I hope will feel different afterward?
  • What support do I need to feel comfortable here?

Your facilitator will guide the process, so there's no need to prepare perfectly. It's okay if it takes time to feel comfortable, you can move at your own pace.
