We Can Help With

Trauma has many faces. It may be a single incident event – sexual assault, witnessing violence, a natural disaster or a sudden loss. Or it may be a prolonged, chronic experience like childhood abuse, domestic violence, or exposure to an unhealthy emotional environment. Regardless of the type, traumatic events can lead to hypervigilance, avoidance, isolation and shame and can have significant effects on individuals long after the traumatic experience.

For trauma survivors entering therapy is often an act of courage. The thought of trusting another person with vulnerable experiences can be hard to imagine. Thus, at the start of therapy, our initial focus is developing a strong therapeutic relationship by providing a safe space and respectful,  compassionate presence.

All Beacon Therapy Group clinicians have extensive training and experience working with individuals who have experienced a variety of adverse life experiences. We utilize proven techniques, like EMDR, to guide  you on your healing journey. We aim to help you put the past in the past, live in the present, and be hopeful about the future.

The adjustment to college life can be very challenging! For many college students, this is the first time living on their own and the transition is often overwhelming.

College students can feel cut off and alone and often don’t have access to the same family and support structure that they did in high school. The transition can also  be especially challenging for international students. Cultural views on academics can also add to the stress and pressure. The high-pressure academic environment of college can lead to a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and even academic problems.

Whether you are suffering from issues like loneliness, questioning your choice of major, difficulty connecting with other students, or anxiety due to your studies and exams, we can help. We aid students in learning the coping skills they need to enjoy better mental health and focus on their studies.

  • Do you often feel anxious, nervous, or have uncontrollable worry?
  • Do you have trouble relaxing?
  • Do social situations make you feel uncomfortable?
  • Do you ever feel down, depressed?
  • Have you lost interest in things you normally enjoy?

Feeling anxious and down at times are normal emotional experiences, but for some they may become too overwhelming to manage. Oftentimes people utilize strategies to handle their intense emotions like ignoring feelings or “bootstrapping” or avoiding situations or people. While these strategies may provide some relief, the results are often temporary.

At Beacon Therapy Group, we focus on teaching those with anxiety and/or depressed moods effective coping skills to manage their emotions. These skills to regulate one’s emotional experience are important life skills that aid people in living emotional balanced lives and live up to their full potential.

  • Navigating relationship challenges can be complex and overwhelming. Whether you're facing issues in romantic relationships, social circles, peer interactions, or parent-child dynamics, these struggles can impact your overall well-being. Relationship challenges may arise from communication breakdowns, trust issues, unresolved conflicts, or differing expectations and needs.

At Beacon Therapy Group, we understand the profound impact that relationship difficulties can have on your life. Our approach is centered on creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore and address these challenges. We work collaboratively with you to develop effective communication skills, enhance emotional understanding, and foster healthier, more fulfilling connections.

Our clinicians are experienced in working with a diverse range of relationship issues. Whether you're seeking to strengthen a romantic relationship, improve social interactions, navigate peer conflicts, or address challenging family dynamics, we utilize evidence-based techniques to support your journey. Our goal is to help you cultivate meaningful, satisfying relationships that contribute to your overall emotional and mental well-being.

Adjusting to life in a new country can be both exciting and challenging. International students often face unique stressors such as navigating different cultural norms, homesickness, academic pressures, and building new social connections. These challenges can impact your mental health and overall well-being.

At Beacon Therapy Group, we provide specialized support tailored to the needs of international students. Our clinicians respect and value the diverse cultural backgrounds of our clients and are experienced in addressing the specific concerns that come with studying abroad.

We offer a welcoming and inclusive space where you can openly discuss your experiences and feelings. Our goal is to help you navigate the transition, manage stress, and build a supportive network that enhances your academic and personal success. Through individual therapy, we utilize culturally sensitive approaches to help you develop coping strategies, improve communication skills, and foster resilience.
Whether you're struggling with homesickness, academic stress, or building new social connections, we're here to support you every step of the way. Our aim is to help you thrive while honoring your cultural identity and making the most of your international student experience.

What to expect for your first therapy session

Details & Timing

Your first session will be about 45-55 minutes. During this time, your therapist will learn about you, in particular, the reason(s) you decided to start therapy. Your therapist will also review your medical history, personal history, and current academic/work situation. Many of our clients have experienced significant traumatic experiences. Please know that clients are not required to speak about any difficult situations until they are ready. It takes time to build confidence and trust so know that there is no rush in providing the details of your story (if it does not feel right).

Preparing For Your Session

To prepare for your first session, you may want to consider the following:

What brings me to therapy now? What is currently most challenging for me? What do I hope will be different if I attend therapy? What am I doing that is helping my current situation? Is there anything I am doing that is making my situation worse?

Your therapist will guide the first session, so don’t feel pressure in knowing what to say! One of the most important factors of treatment is feeling comfortable with your therapist, which may come over time. Feel free to ask your therapist questions to learn more about their style and approach to treatment.

Next Steps & Ongoing Therapy

At the end of your first session you and your therapist will discuss next steps. If you and your therapist agree that you are a match, you will schedule your next appointment.

We offer a variety of therapy services, including Individual Therapy, Neuropsychological Assessments, EMDR Intensives, AEDP, IFS, polyvagal, trauma sensitive yoga, CBT, DBT, and ACT.
