What to expect for your first therapy session

Details & Timing

Your first session will be about 45-55 minutes. During this time, your therapist will learn about you, in particular, the reason(s) you decided to start therapy. Your therapist will also review your medical history, personal history, and current academic/work situation. Many of our clients have experienced significant traumatic experiences. Please know that clients are not required to speak about any difficult situations until they are ready. It takes time to build confidence and trust so know that there is no rush in providing the details of your story (if it does not feel right).

Preparing For Your Session

To prepare for your first session, you may want to consider the following:

What brings me to therapy now? What is currently most challenging for me? What do I hope will be different if I attend therapy? What am I doing that is helping my current situation? Is there anything I am doing that is making my situation worse?

Your therapist will guide the first session, so don’t feel pressure in knowing what to say! One of the most important factors of treatment is feeling comfortable with your therapist, which may come over time. Feel free to ask your therapist questions to learn more about their style and approach to treatment.

Next Steps & Ongoing Therapy

At the end of your first session you and your therapist will discuss next steps. If you and your therapist agree that you are a match, you will schedule your next appointment.

We’ll guide you through every step of the therapy process.

Choosing to start therapy is an important step and we’re here to guide you through every step of your healing journey. Schedule your first appointment today to get started.
