Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Getting started is simple. Complete our online intake form, and our team will follow up to learn more about your needs and connect you with the appropriate service, whether you're seeking therapy, a neuropsychological assessment, or another specialty service.
Your first session lasts approximately 45–55 minutes. Your therapist will take time to get to know you — what brought you to therapy, your personal and medical history, and your current life situation.
You are never required to share more than you're ready to share. Trust takes time to build, and there's no pressure to dive into difficult experiences before you feel safe doing so.
To help you feel prepared, you might reflect on:
- What's bringing me to therapy right now?
- What feels most challenging in my life?
- What do I hope will be different after starting therapy?
- What's already helping — or making things harder?
Your therapist will guide the conversation, so there's no need to have it all figured out beforehand. At the end of the session, you'll discuss whether you'd like to move forward together and review any recommendations for treatment. If you decide to continue, your therapist will discuss an ongoing schedule that supports your goals and availability.
The therapeutic relationship matters — a lot. If you don't feel like your therapist is the right match, please let us know. We'll work with you to find another clinician within our practice who better fits your needs and goals.
Yes. Beacon Therapy Group is a safe, affirming, and inclusive practice welcoming clients of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. Our care is trauma-informed — rooted in the understanding that oppression itself is a form of trauma. We work through a social-justice-focused, intersectional, anti-oppression lens, supporting clients in healing and reclaiming their sense of power and agency.

Trauma therapy is specialized mental health treatment that helps individuals process and heal from overwhelming or distressing experiences — whether that's childhood adversity, abuse, loss, accidents, or the lasting effects of systemic oppression.
Unaddressed trauma can show up in many ways: anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, difficulty in relationships, or a persistent feeling of being "stuck." Trauma therapy helps you make sense of these responses and work through them at a pace that feels safe for you.
At Beacon Therapy Group, all of our work is trauma-informed — meaning every clinician understands how trauma shapes the mind, body, and behavior. If you're unsure whether trauma therapy is right for you, your first session is a great place to start that conversation.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. It uses bilateral stimulation — such as guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional intensity. Learn more about EMDR →
EMDR Intensives are extended, focused therapy sessions that allow for deeper trauma processing in a shorter timeframe. They're a strong fit if you're looking for faster results, have a busy schedule that makes weekly therapy difficult, or live in an area without regular access to EMDR therapy. Assessments
A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that measures how your brain is functioning across key areas — including attention, memory, processing speed, executive functioning, language, and emotional regulation. It goes beyond a standard clinical interview to give you a detailed, objective picture of your cognitive strengths and challenges.
At Beacon Therapy Group, assessments are commonly used to evaluate for ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning differences, and other conditions that affect how you think, learn, and process information.
The results provide diagnostic clarity and — where applicable — can support requests for academic or workplace accommodations.
A neuropsychological assessment may be helpful if you're seeking:
- A diagnostic evaluation for ADHD or autism spectrum disorder
- Academic accommodations (especially for college students)
- A clearer understanding of your cognitive strengths, challenges, or emotional functioning
You'll receive detailed preparation instructions before your assessment. In general, try to be well-rested on the day of your appointment and bring any relevant medical or educational records.
