Expanding the binary on grieving with Rachael Mathieu, LICSW. A support group for Queer and Trans identified people navigating the complexities of loss.

“Grief is an ingredient in every love potion”-Andrea Gibson

Grief is part of the fabric for many people within the queer community. Grief that extends past the immediate experiences of loss, and doesn’t always have a name or specific origin. Ambiguous loss within the queer community can look and feel like:

  • Unprocessed grief for the loss of the childhood/adolescence you wish you had
  • Relationships that are in and out of your life because they struggle to acknowledge or support you
  • Collective grief and rage for our past, present and futures

This space is:

  • Queer and Trans affirming, led by a Queer therapist
  • Non-judgmental and confidential
  • Focused on all kinds of grief

In this group we will:

  • Learn and self define experiences of ambiguous grief
  • Share, reflect, support and witness each other’s stories of loss and disconnection
  • Create ideas for rituals to name, tend to and release all types of grief
  • Leave with practices for continued self care beyond the group

What to expect for your group therapy session

Details & Timing

Each group workshop has its own schedule, meeting time, and participant limit. Some groups meet weekly for several weeks, while others are single-day workshops. In your first session, the facilitator will review the goals and structure of the group, introduce members to one another, and explain how sessions will run. You’ll also have the opportunity to share what brought you to the group—though, as with individual therapy, there is no pressure to discuss anything you’re not ready to. We understand it can take time to feel comfortable opening up in a group setting, and you are welcome to participate at your own pace.

Preparing For Your Session

To prepare for your first group session, you may want to consider the following:

  • What brings me to this group now?
  • What challenges am I hoping to explore or work on here?
  • What do I hope will be different after participating?
  • How do I currently cope with these challenges, and is anything I’m doing making things harder?
  • Is there anything you’d like to share with the group that would help make it a supportive space for you?

Your facilitator will guide the first session, so there’s no need to feel pressure about knowing exactly what to say. In group therapy, one of the most important parts of the process is feeling comfortable with the facilitator and with the group itself—which can take time. You are welcome to ask questions to better understand the group’s format, the facilitator’s approach, and how the sessions will support your goals.
